Te Matatiki Toi Ora The Arts Centre

Christchurch, New Zealand

The Arts Centre in Ōtautahi Christchurch, New Zealand, is a dynamic hub for creative experimentation, collaboration and community engagement.

In te reo Māori, the centre is Te Matatiki Toi Ora, the Spring of Living Art. This acknowledges the ancient life-giving springs of the area and the centre’s role today as a creative wellspring.

The Arts Centre is operated by an independent charitable trust under a special Act of Parliament. Over 100 artists, art organisations, galleries, museums, and other businesses work at The Arts Centre. The centre’s operations include producing creative events and site activations year-round, education programmes for schools, venues for hire, and Walk Christchurch for tourist-oriented guided walks.

The Arts Centre is also a nationally significant heritage site because of its remarkable Gothic Revival architecture and receives over one million visitors per year. Most buildings were restored and strengthened after the earthquakes 2010-11.
